Day 5

Our day starts from Thunder Bay ON, a few kilometers past the city we came upon the Terry Fox Memorial. This is near the area were he unfortunately had to end his journey. After starting in the maritimes and running approximately 40 kilometers a day, 139 or so days he ran.. Crazy!!!! We are tired after 4 days of driving..

Here is Thunder Bay from far.

A picture of Ethan!! Finally, he never looks at the camera.

Ethan's first Chipmunk.  Cute and friendly little fella.

Definitely a courageous little chipmunk.

Tried to eat my toe.. guess he gets fed a lot!

A little further away, we spotted an Amethyst mine. Here are some of the amethyst they have mined so far.

Supposedly amethyst's come in different colors depending on its components.

The active mine.

In the guest digging pit looking for amethyst.

Lots of amethyst to be found.

A really cool piece they found where the amethyst has cemented the little rocks together.

Here you can see Pearl River Valley, Black Bay, Lake Superior and The Paps.

We managed to take a picture of ourselves without the help of anyone!!

If you look carefully, this is all one rock face.. The lower part is bright red, the higher section is black.

Our first closer look of Lake Superior.

Lake Superior with train track on the lower right hand corner.

Our night ends in Sault St. Marie. If everything goes well, we should be in Ottawa tomorrow night.

Day 4

We left this morning from Winnipeg, and saw just how bad the streets here are, this picture does NOT do any justice to the bad quality of the streets. They were the worst I have seen anywhere!

Again a double decker train!! We love seeing our trains.

What a beautiful sky, and a view that isn't flat.

Ethan got really excited seeing this lumber truck. He couldn't believe that Ontario can fit upwards of 300 logs on one truck.

Kakabeka Falls in Ontario.

The view following the Kakabeka falls.

Another view of the falls.

And again, another view.

And this is all for today. Probably the most boring day of our trip. Kakabeka Falls was the only thing to visit the entire day!!  Stopped for the night in Thunder Bay, ON.

Day 3

We are in the prairies! Heading out of Medicine Hat, more trains along the road, this one is pretty cool, its a double decker.

We took a picture of this radio tower, since Nathan and Ethan had a conversation about these thin radio towers being held by cables on three sides.

The view we have from the car, ALL the time, miles and miles of fields.

Oil wells littering the farmers fields. Are these fields even safe to eat??

We have no idea what this is, our best guess was a refinery of some sort.

You can see forever.....

Salt flats fields, it looks like snow.

Salt flats again!

More fields... again.

Well,... the night sky is pretty.

We did a really cool tour today in Moose Jaw, were we got to visit old tunnels under the city.
Today's night ended in Winnipeg.

Day 2

Day 2 of our trip, we left Calgary for some really flat land. No more mountains in sight.

This is one is for the street lines. Were finally seeing long stretches of the road where you can pass. Ethan was quite impressed.

We detoured to Drumheller to see the Royal Tyrrell Museum, (It's a Dinosaur Museum). The entire town has  statues and things about dinosaurs. Here is the T-Rex on the IGA's building.

Inside the museum you are greeted with this scene! Scary!

These are fossils of a member of the T-rex family.

Here is another representation of an almost full skeleton of a T-Rex, this guy has traveled the world to visit many museums.

The skull of what they believe to be the Grand-father of the Triceratops.

I believe this was referred to as bird steelers, or something of the sort, these little guys (they are quite tiny, about 1 meter high or so.) Steal the eggs from nests.

Karine, with her new best friend, who needs a cat or dog, when you can have a dinosaur!

This is the land surrounding Drumheller, they are little hills of sandstone where you can see all the layers. Many of Canada's dinosaurs have been found in this region.

More views of the surrounding hills. They are extremely pretty! Worth the little detour.

More scenery.

And again!

Once more!

This is the old Atlas Coal Mine.

The Atlas Coal Mines tipple.

Probably Karine's favourite picture of the trip so far, it is so cluttered with mining equipment, it makes the mess look really pretty.

Red dirt!!!! Red dirt!!!!! Reminded Karine of PEI.

A recreation of the train system that used to bring miners in and out of the coal mines. We are also getting a tour aboard this little train.

If this video works, you can see a small section of the train in motion, turn your speakers down a little bit, its quite loud.

One last scenery before we left for Medicine Hat, AB

In Medicine Hat, we met up with Karine's friend Loring for dinner.   All in all, we only traveled about 4 hours of distance today.
